Customer feedback

Our mastitis plan was the ultimate for me

People ask me what we did, and I just think they haven’t realised it isn’t one thing, and that they have a whole process in front of them. I would hate to go back to where we were!

Craig Gallpen - Deniliquin

The farmers were at their wits end

The supplier sought assistance from Dairy Focus. The result has been a return to premium milk quality within 6 weeks and culling of only 6 cows from the 150 cow herd.

Are you concerned that you are not getting enough successful outcomes from your treatments?

Do you regularly have to extend or change your treatment regimes?

What cure rates should you expect?

In this case, we are talking about cure rates for the treatment of clinical cases of mastitis.

Achieving a successful treatment outcome is dependant on many factors – some of these factors are under our control, some are not.

Some of the key factors that will influence the treatment outcome are –

  • type of bacteria causing the infection
  • severity of infection
  • duration of infection prior to treatment
  • previous infection history for that cow and that quarter
  • choice of treatment(s)
  • method of application of treatment(s)
  • duration of treatment
  • overall health of the cow & her immune system

Although you can reduce the overall incidence of some types of bacterial infections, once faced with a clinical case of mastitis, cure rates for different types of bacteria can vary dramatically.

For example, we can expect lower cure rates with Staph aureus infections, but we can expect quite high cure rates with Strep ag infections.

This shows the importance of milk cultures in determining the most likely cause of mastitis infections in a herd in order to make the best possible choice of initial treatment.

(The bonus is that knowing which bacteria are most likely to be causing mastitis is also the cornerstone for developing a plan to reduce the risk of future cases of mastitis.)

At Dairy Focus, we work with you to develop a knowledge base for your farm to cover as many of the key points listed above as is possible, and build a structured but adaptable treatment regime based on what is actually happening in your herd, then ensure your staff have a good decision pathway & treatment plan to follow.

We then regularly monitor treatment outcomes and adapt the basic treatment structure - if and when it is needed.

clinical caseWhilst every dairy farm would like to have no mastitis at all, that is not really possible yet!

So, how many clinical cases is too many clinical cases?

Repeat cases

Do you have cows that breakdown with another clinical case despite apparently having been treated successfully?

Develop a strategy to deal with these cows - make informed decisions about retreatment (whether to treat and what to treat with) versus culling.

High culling rate

Are you losing too many cows because of mastitis?

Make informed decisions to ensure that only the right cows are culled - both at the right time & for the right reasons.

Countdown has shown us that on average, every four clinical cases of mastitis cost a farm over $1000.

And every payment period out of premium costs the farm even more.

Rain and mud often create mastitis and higher cell counts for many farms – a number of those farms will be left with ongoing mastitis or cell count issues.

How can we help those farms retrieve the situation and also prevent the mastitis from spreading further throughout the herd?

Dairy Focus has put together a special “Mastitis Rescue Pack” to help these farms know what their individual mastitis risks and issues are, and to give them a plan that targets their specific needs.
